I know the book you mean, but I haven't read it. Gary Soto has written a ton of books. We had to read one
of his books way back in Junior High. I don't remember the name of it, but it was kind of dumb. It was about some boy going to Japan to learn karate. I found it terribly boring as I do with most of the books I had to read for school. A boy would like it though.
